A Note From The Publisher
At the time of this writing, I have just received a phone call that completely devastated me. My best friend of 60 years, Wendy, has passed away. She had a heart attack which was quite unexpected. Her husband called me and was almost too devasted, himself, to speak. It will be a long time before I can accept this horrific reality but in the mean time..... It is the month of Thanksgiving and I have to say that I am thankful for 60 years of love, laughter, shared moments of tragedy or joy, fun times at the dance studio where we both taught, friendship and just outright sisterhood. She was talented, smart, cleaver, sharp witted, and the kind of woman that every woman would aspire to be. My life is absolutely all the better for having her in it. She was 9 years older than me and I could write a book on what I learned from her.
At the moment, I feel numb, stunned, and trying to grasp that which cannot be understood. Please help me pray for comfort that only Father God can bring for Wendy's friends and family. She has two grown sons, a husband and daughter-in-law who will greatly miss her and no doubt struggle to do life without her, as will I. Only God can help us through and I know He will.
I know you have heard people say "life is short" or "there's no promise of tomorrow," but you never really understand until you lose someone so close to you who you thought would just be there forever. Call your best friend and tell them you love them and tell them what they mean to you. Do it in honor of Wendy and me. I would give anything to hear her voice, her laughter, just one more time.

What Are You Thankful For?:
Submitted by Lori Leath Smith, Publisher - Life Media, Inc. Destin Life community newspaper
“Reflect upon your present blessings—of which every man has many—not on your past
misfortunes, of which all men have some.” — Charles Dickens
A sunset over the Bay; schools where parents are involved and teachers are impeccable;
community parks with so much to offer; a business community based on relationships and
trust—these are just a few of the positive highlights in our community!
Each year, Life Media (Destin Life, Bay Life, FWB Life) asks, “What are your thankful for?” and
offers readers the opportunity to express appreciation for the people and things in their lives.
Indeed, there is so much to be grateful for!
As you gather to celebrate this Thanksgiving, resolve to make it more than a reason to take a
day off, eat some great food or watch a football game. Make it a time of counting your
blessings. After all, the Pilgrims founded our nation on thankfulness and, instead of focusing on
their losses, they chose to offer thanks for all their blessings.
There are endless ways to express thankfulness to others verbally and physically. Buy someone
a cup of coffee; take a walk on the beach with a friend who is struggling or leave a larger tip at a
restaurant. Even small, positive, every-day words and benevolent actions can mean a world of
difference to those around you. You never know—it could be a lifeline for them, and it just
might mean even more to you.
As your publisher, I’m thankful for so many reasons. But one thing is certain—I’m grateful for
this community of friends and colleagues who, with compassion and caring, support and
patience, have come alongside me and my family as we continue to navigate through the tragic
passing of my nephew—our beloved Wesley Turpin. It is truly comforting and blessed, and we
cherish all of you. I’m also thankful for our partners and readers. It’s your voices and your
continued support that make this publication popular and valuable.
— Lori Leath Smith, Life Media Group
I am ever so thankful for my locals Facebook group of six years,
at www.Facebook.com/groups/Destinties. The helpfulness which members continue to show
each other and blessings they bring to me personally day to day are unprecedented.

Although there are so many reasons to feel and be thankful, my list begins with family. God has
truly blessed me with an amazing family which, by the way, keeps on growing. After that
what comes to mind is how fortunate and thankful I am to live here in this beautiful slice of
heaven, to do the work I do with Life Media, and for good health, which we can never take for
granted. And, above all for Jesus Christ my Lord and Savior without who none of this would be
possible. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
— Scott Miller, Director of Sales and Advertising, Life Media Group

I am thankful for my beautiful, and equally brilliant wife, Laura, the incredible love we
share and the beauty of being in love with my best friend. I am also immensely thankful
for my parents, siblings, and especially my three children and the close relationship we
all have, as well as the opportunity to share in each of their incredible journeys as young
adults making their way in the world and doing so with a positive outlook and a friendly
smile, to share with all around them. I am also so thankful for my and Laura close
group of friends who have been beside us since our very first date and continue to
enrich our lives in a way that makes them all more like family than friends. You know
who you are—we love you! Lastly, I am thankful for the opportunity and God given
privilege to live, love, believe, create, worship, work, and speak --largely without
persecution-- in a state where freedom still matters, but morals, love, and our fellow
citizens and neighbors do too.

8 Fall Home Maintenance Tips For Destinites Homeowners:
By Paul McArthur - Owner: Agape Home Pro
Happy Fall Ya’ll!
The United States has five major climate zones, so maintenance for a home in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, differs wildly from one in moist, mildly tropical Destin, Florida. The Sunshine State also must contend with hurricanes and annual average precipitation of about 54 inches – though we got lucky this year… so far.
Muggy Florida summers make almost any outdoor work unbearable. Fall, however, is a perfect time to give your home a seasonal tune-up. To help you get your home ready, we’ve put together eight helpful fall home maintenance tips specifically for Florida homeowners.
#1 Check Your Disaster Supply Kit
When hurricane season ends on November 30, it’s important to check your disaster supply kit and make sure you’re ready for the next season—or any unexpected weather events. If you don’t currently have a disaster supply kit, stop putting it off and make one! Since Florida is the most hurricane-prone state in the U.S., it’s critical to be prepared at all times. Here are ten essential items to include in your disaster supply kit:
Download your complete disaster supply kit checklist from Florida Division of Emergency Management.
#2 Maintain Your Swimming Pool
Florida pools are in use year-round, so it’s hard to find a perfect time for maintenance. If you have a pool, you should do a thorough inspection at least once a year—and fall is as good a time as any. Make sure to clean your pool thoroughly, including debris traps to prevent leaves or any rubbish from building up and clogging your pool’s filtration system. Inspect ladders, handrails, diving boards, and other pool equipment for loose parts or any deterioration.
Keep in mind some pool issues are difficult to spot if you’re not a professional. A certified expert can check your pool’s plumbing and water pressure and identify leaks or drainage issues. They can also check motors, pumps and electrical parts like lights and wires.
#3 Care for Your Yard
If you have trees or shrubs on your property, you should add trimming and pruning to your fall to-do list. After hurricane season, there could be broken branches in your trees, which is why fall is the perfect time to trim and prune them. You should remove any branches that could potentially damage your home. Pruning dead branches also helps your trees’ overall health, making them more resistant to storm damage in the future. And now that rainy season is over make sure you are watering and fertilizing your grass.
#4 Make Exterior Repairs
Many Floridians mistakenly forget to inspect their house after hurricane season. The tiniest of storms can cause damage to your home. Take a walk around your property and inspect your roof, siding, and foundation. Look for any small gaps where critters could enter your home. The smallest crack can welcome a ton of un-wanted guests into your home.
#5 Power Wash Windows and Siding
Consider power washing your windows and siding to improve your home’s appearance. The fall provides more comfortable outdoor weather than the hot and humid months of July and August. When done appropriately, a good power wash can banish health hazards like mold and mildew. Power washing can also get rid of buildup and debris, giving your home a renewed look.
#6 Paint Your House
If you want to paint the exterior of your home, fall is a perfect time! It’s best to paint the outside of your home when temperatures start to drop. Plus, there are fewer chances of rain, which can really mess up a paint job. And your house will look its best for the upcoming holiday season.
#7 Check Your Alarms
Now is a great time to check your carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms—and put in fresh batteries. If you do not own a carbon monoxide detector, you should strongly consider purchasing one—especially if you have oil or gas-burning appliances. Carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless byproduct of burning oil or gas that can be deadly.
#8 Clean Your Grill
Now that temperatures are becoming more bearable, you’ll probably be using your grill more often. Make sure it’s in tip-top shape! A dirty grill not only makes your food taste bad, but it also creates a fire hazard. Remove all grease and fat build using a grill brush. Try and use a bristle-free brush because bristles can easily break free and land on the grill, creating a possible choking hazard.
To prevent any other fire hazards, make sure your grill is in a location far away from your home or shed. You should also check your propane grill’s gas tank hose for leaks before using it. Wash the hose with a light soap and water solution. If there is a leak, gas will escape from cracks and form new bubbles on the hose’s surface. Smaller bubbles indicate a minor leak, while larger bubbles indicate a more significant leak. If this happens, turn your grill off and replace the hose.
Weather-wise, fall is the perfect time to give your Destin home a checkup. Staying on top of the little things now can help you to avoid costly damages in the future. And if you follow these fall home maintenance tips, your home will be running more efficiently for the year.

Creating a Cozy Space for the Fall & Winter Months:
by Kim Schneider owner: Home - Coastal Design by Kim
The cooler weather is finally here! If you’re anything like me, it’s welcomed but you experience the chill quickly after our hotter than hot months. Below are a few tips to add a little warmth to your space for these fall and winter months.
COLORS – Navy Blue, Dark Green, Chocolate and Carmel will add depth and warmth to your space. You can achieve this by adding
throw pillows, blankets, candles, and even curtains.
CANDLES – adding candles to your space creates a warm glow and they can be purchased in colors that will compliment your room. If you like scents, there are many to select from such as Pumpkin Spice, Cinnamon Apple, Teakwood, Fir and so many more.
CENTERPIECES – create a tablescape with pumpkins, gourds, and pomegranates to create a beautiful and colorful centerpiece. Adding a live plant such as rosemary will add texture and it provides a great aroma too.
THROW PILLOWS AND BLANKETS – use textures such as fur, flannel, velvet or a chunky cable knit. They help to create a cozy and
inviting look in your space.
LIGHTBULBS – consider swapping those bright daylight, almost fluorescent bulbs out for a warmer bulb in your living room and
bedroom. This will help give your bedroom a relaxing feel and can be very welcoming in your living room.
If you keep these tips in mind, you will create a perfect cozy space that you can enjoy as it gets cooler.

DNA & Homicide Investigations:

By now, everybody has heard of DNA and what an amazing forensic tool it is in solving
homicide investigations. If there is a DNA match at a crime scene, the DNA belongs to only one
person on the planet (unless there is an identical twin). Scientifically, the FBI estimates a DNA
match to be around 1 in 113 billion—WAY more than there are people on Earth. Since its
discovery and ongoing refinement of its analysis, DNA remains the gold standard of forensic
tools. Every detective yearns to solve homicides with a DNA match to ensure a fair verdict.
Conversely, a non-match to DNA can exonerate a suspect of a crime, which in turn, prevents
valuable law enforcement resources from being wasted.
DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) is a molecule that contains genetic information for an
organism’s development and function and consists of two chains that coil around each other to
form a double helix. DNA can be found in blood, saliva, semen, hair follicles, tissue,
perspiration, urine, feces, bone, teeth and skin cells. It is microscopic and invisible to the naked
eye.
As good as DNA is in solving homicides and getting to the truth, there are some hurdles
that must be overcome to use DNA analysis effectively. The three uppermost obstacles are
obtaining DNA samples, matching DNA found at a crime scene to a DNA database and putting
DNA evidence in perspective of the crime scene.
The first obstacle is obtaining DNA evidence. Since DNA is microscopic, an experienced
investigator must guess at the most probable areas where DNA might be found. The investigator
must blindly extract the DNA, collect it in a sterile container and send it to the crime lab for
analysis. Results often take several months and DNA analysis is expensive, so the investigator
must make smart choices on what to analyze and what not to analyze. This knowledge comes
exclusively from experience and a thorough analysis of the crime scene.
The second obstacle is in matching the DNA sample collected at the crime scene to a
DNA database that contains biographical information of the owner. In 1994, Congress passed the
DNA Identification Act which authorized the FBI to create a national DNA database of
convicted offenders. The FBI formed CODIS (Combined DNA Index System) that provides
access to local and state crime labs. Crime labs can compare DNA profiles electronically from
any participating crime lab and identify suspects by matching DNA from crime scenes to
convicted offenders.
As of September 2020, CODIS contained more than 14 million offender profiles. While
this seems to be a lot, if you compare it to the population of the United States (roughly 300
million), the chance of a match is less than 5 percent. In addition, if you consider births and
deaths since CODIS was created, the percentage becomes even less. By comparison, civilian
genealogical companies like Ancentry.com have over 22 million DNA profiles, 23andme.com
over 12 million DNA profiles and MyHeritage.com over 6 million DNA profiles. With only a
few exceptions, these civilian companies do not cooperate with law enforcement’s request to
compare their DNA profiles taken at crime scenes to their database. The conclusion is that the
chance of a DNA match of a profile collected at a crime scene to a known DNA profile is very
small.
The third obstacle to the use of DNA in a homicide investigation is putting the matched
sample in perspective of the crime. DNA is non-biased and purely scientific; however, DNA
samples are not time stamped. There is no way to tell if a DNA sample was left an hour ago or a
year ago. It only states the DNA sample was left. The investigator must determine that the
suspect was not supposed to be at that location so was lying to them about their whereabouts.
Obviously, DNA matching in a violent crime between two people who know each other well
may not be an effective tool since their encounter may have been from a non-criminal activity in
days, months or years past.
In our club of criminal sleuths, we have members who have worked on criminal
investigations in the past, researched extensively, and watched, read, or listened to cases where
previously collected DNA samples were used to convict a guilty suspect or to exonerate an
innocent one. The astute investigator combines good investigative know-how with the latest
trends in scientific discovery to get to the truth. So, no matter your background, do you want to
get involved and learn how to become a good true crime sleuth? If so, come join us!
The Destin True Crime Club meets at Elite Cabinet Designs located at 11714 Emerald
Coast Parkway (Highway 98), Miramar Beach. It’s on the corner of Highway 98 and Forest
Shore Drive (across from Seascape). Elite Cabinet Designs is a private company owned by one
of our members who has generously donated the use of this meeting space. The next club
meeting is November 21st from 5:30 – 7:30 pm.
In addition to the monthly meetings, I also conduct monthly Homicide Investigations
Training for Civilian Sleuths (HIT-CS). The next HIT-CS will be on November 7th from 6:00 –
7:30 pm, This Masterclass training series is to learn about homicide investigation concepts and
the training is geared toward civilians with no prior training in police investigations. You can
also join us on FaceBook at Destin True Crime Club. We use the FaceBook site to discuss
REAL unsolved cases and it is where we add our collective knowledge of those cases.

Christian Corner: by Patricia Lee
Ephesians 5:18-20: "Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ"
No matter how bad things currently are there is always something for which you can feel thankful. If you woke up this morning, that would be the first thing for which to be thankful. It's the little things that we tend to take for granted and should stop to think about from time to time. Take a moment to say a prayer to Father God where by you just thank him for all in your life that is right and good. Most of our prayers are asking for His help which is fine and yes, He wants us to do that, but we also need to just say prayers of thanks sometimes. I invite you to do that right now. I promise that when you finish your heart will be full and happy!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!
