February 2024 Newsletter
A Note From The Publisher
I would like to share a personal Valentines Day story. It's not the usual way most people celebrate. Picture it, February 14, 2005, an almost 47 year old lady in the hospital having just gone through surgery for a right mastectomy due to breast cancer. That lady was me and the surgery was followed by a grim diagnosis; stage 3C breast cancer.
Fifteen lymph nodes were removed and 14 were positive. Not only that but the cancer had broken through the cells and were now running through my bloodstream. I later asked my Oncologist if I would live to see my son graduate high school. He sadly looked down at the ground as he said, "Probably not." It's important to note here that my son was in third grade and my daughter was in tenth, at that time. They are now twenty-nine and thirty-five. I did receive a miracle from God and I well remember that blessed night. Not enough room to include that story in this article but if you would like the details, I am happy to share, so please feel free to reach out to me ([email protected]).
The main point to this story for the moment, is for you to know the following. The reason my diagnosis was so grim is because I was originally misdiagnosed. My doctor sent me to a surgeon because she thought they would want to do a biopsy. However, they did an X-ray and the surgeon walked in the room saying, "Good news! It's not cancer." Words I wanted to believe so badly, so I trusted her. I later learned that there was no way she could have known for sure if it was cancer or not without doing a biopsy. I didn't know she couldn't tell just from looking at an X-ray. She hung a name on the knot and told me that they never bother with "those." I said, "What if it starts to grow and bothers me?" She said, "If that happens, we may possibly remove it but normally, we just leave these types of knots alone." Well, it did grow but I wasn't worried about it since she said so emphatically that it wasn't cancer. I did eventually get it seen about and that is when the truth was discovered but it was too late. My point to everything I am saying? Please be proactive with taking care of yourself. Don't get excited just because a doctor is giving you news you want to hear. If something on or in your body doesn't look or feel right and you are told it's nothing to worry about, go get a second opinion. I never dreamed that the surgeon would dare play with my life that way but she certainly did. Second opinions can save a lot of heartache, suffering and maybe even save your life. Yes, it is a little trouble but your life is worth it. You matter! Just do it!

Soar in 2024! ACSM Names “Wearable Tech” as the Top Fitness Trend for 2024
Submitted by Lori Leath Smith, Publisher - Life Media, Inc. Destin Life community newspaper
Written by: Lisa Leath Turpin, Health and Wellness Coach
Here we are starting a new year and making new resolutions to encourage ourselves to strive to be the best version of ourselves. We’ve been through a lot the past four years. But, I am ready more than ever to pump up my health and strength! It’s time to SOAR in 2024! My recommendation to get started? Set short-term goals and make them specific. Write them out and put them in sight so you see them A LOT, like on the refrigerator, bathroom mirror or dash of your car. Perhaps, sign up for a Run/Walk as a motivator.
As you age, you might notice that it can be more challenging to keep your strength up. That’s the natural progression of our bodies; the only way to combat the decline is to do some type of strength training—use it or lose it! We have to use our muscles or they will get weak. Join a fitness class, hire a qualified personal trainer or grab a partner and hit the gym—anything to develop a consistent schedule. There will be days you don’t want to work out. But, the less you give in and carve time for it, the more you mentally train yourself to overcome. When you do, you learn how good you feel after, both mentally (proud) and physically.
So, what does 2024 look like for the fitness industry? The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), which sets the standards for the industry as a whole, conducts a study each year where they survey 3000 + health and fitness pros from every continent worldwide. Now in its 18th year, the “Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends” has named wearable tech to be the number 1 trend for
2024, the same as in 2020. So, if you use your smartwatch or fitness tracker to track your exercise, heart rate, step count, calorie consumption or sleep quality, you are already hitting the top fitness trend. Personally, I love this trend, because it allows me to further customize performance and tracking for day-to-day physical activity for my clients and track progress over
time.
This year’s survey provided 45 potential trends to choose from, including a new 2024 potential trend that acknowledges the bold return to in-person fitness, such as boutique fitness studios and subscription-based memberships.
Some of the top 5 trends for 2023 included fitness programs for older adults, functional fitness training and strength training. Notably, recent top previous trends as a result of quarantine mandates, such as online live exercise classes, fell out of the top 10 trends list in 2023. In spots 6-10 are employing certified exercise professionals, mobile exercise aapps, exercise for mental health, youth athletic development and personal training. My favorite, personal training, seems to always remain a staple in the top 10 fitness trends and has since the survey’s beginning in 2007.
The benefits include one-on-one training with fitness testing, goal setting and getting you on a customized program for your ongoing lifestyle.

February Home Maintenance And Safety Checklist:
By Paul McArthur - Owner: Agape Home Pro
February is American Heart Month.
Hearts are everywhere in February, so let’s show some love to our homes in February!
1. CLEAN THE KITCHEN
Check a couple of these items off your winter home safety maintenance checklist to improve conditions in your kitchen.
Deep clean the garbage disposal
Nobody likes a stinky sink, so take a little time this February to clear the air in your kitchen. A clogged garbage disposal isn’t just gross—it can create expensive plumbing problems. Here’s how to clean your garbage disposal.
Keep your garbage disposal clean for the rest of the year by grinding orange and lemon peels once a week.
Clean out the oven
Did you know that 8% of home cooking fires are caused by dirty ovens or ranges? Grime and food built up over the year can render your oven a grimy fire hazard if you don’t clean it regularly.
The good news is cleaning the oven is as easy as following the instructions on your favorite brand of oven cleaner.
2. BE FIRE SMART
It’s easy to take your hallways for granted when it comes to routine checks and maintenance. These quick tasks take only a few minutes and can keep your home safe all year.
Check fire extinguishers
Kitchen fires are serious business. From 2012 to 2016, cooking was the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries and the second leading cause behind home fire deaths.
You can keep an accident from becoming a tragedy by investing in a fire extinguisher and training your family on how to use it. If you already have one, check the gauge to make sure it's in the green. If not, get it recharged or replace it.
Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors
Dead batteries caused 25% of smoke alarm failures from 2012 to 2016. Simple routine maintenance can keep your home much safer.
This February, check all the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they’re functional. If it’s been over 10 years since you last replaced these units, invest a little cash and replace your existing detectors.
3. ODDS-AND-ENDS UPKEEP
Make your home feel a little cozier with these bedroom and living area improvements.
Change your HVAC filter
Air quality is important inside and outside your home. Breathe a little easier going into spring by changing your HVAC air filter in the hallways, ceilings, or wherever your vent is located. While vents can vary from home to home, the process takes about as long as changing a lightbulb.
Clean linens, carpets, and curtains
Dust, mites, and dander can all cause allergies long before spring pollen strikes. Deep clean your bedsheets, duvets, and comforters in each bedroom to keep the creepy crawlies away. The carpets and curtains in your living areas will also need some love after a year of use.
Upgrade indoor lights
Brighten things up with an upgrade to your living room and bedroom lights. You can control smart lights, and anything plugged into a smart plug directly from your phone.
These devices let you turn on the lights or start your morning coffee without getting out of bed. You can also find smartbulbs that add mood lighting for that big date with your valentine.
4. INSPECT BATHROOMS
Here are a few home safety maintenance tasks to make your throne room fit for a king.
Recaulk the tub and toilet
Prevent leaks and water damage in your home by checking the sealing and caulking in your bathroom. It only takes a few minutes to patch up any problem areas. You can find caulk online or at your local hardware store.
Deep clean to prevent mold
Bathrooms are a paradise for molds, mildew, and fungus. This February, clean out your vents, fix any water leaks, and scrub the walls and ceilings to prevent black mold and other household mildews.
5. UPGRADE OUTSIDE
Clean your gutters
Clean out your gutters this February to prepare for the spring showers. Clogged gutters can cause expensive issues with your roof even if snow and ice aren’t part of the equation.
Upgrade locks
Boost security and convenience with new smart locks this year. Smart locks make it easier for you to get in and out of your house without letting intruders in. They’re especially handy for anyone who tends to lose their keys or needs to let visitors in.
Bottomline, home is where your heart is! Show your home some love this February! And, it’s can be easy to get cabin fever this time of year, so make your home feel a little safer, cleaner, and happier this February by checking some items off this home maintenance list.
As always, there is no shame in asking for help!! And, frankly, depending on your age, you shouldn’t be on a ladder!! There all sorts of quality business in the Destinites Directory who would love to help!

New Year! New You! New Business?:
provided by Melissa Jones, Insurance Agent and Owner: Norton Insurance Agency
We’ve been potty training our three-year-old for the last couple weeks, wait, or is it months, or maybe even years? We feel like we’re living in a hazy bathroom with no end in sight. Our first two
boys potty trained in what felt like days. This son likes to boost our confidence with progress but then reminds us in a very messy way that this could stretch on forever. But we persist,
because we know that the reward of not changing diapers will be worth it. As I forecast insurance for 2024, I’m trying to have the same cautious optimism as we do with our three-year-old. We’re ready for the mess to be over and arrive on the other side with a stable insurance market. We’ve been in a hard
market for about six years where insurance companies were leaving the state, and the remaining companies passed their financial burden over to customers by way of premium increases. As we prepare for another hard year, keep hope that there is an end in sight.
Home Insurance
Home Insurance has been rough over the last few years; the catastrophic losses from the last decade caught up to premiums drastically increasing many rates. We saw many customers getting 25-70% rate increases in 2023.The good news is 2023 had no major storms and the legislative reform from 2023 is already starting to show positive effects. The last two years have seen a decrease of 10% in Florida’s amount of insurance litigation 1 . We can’t be overly optimistic thinking that we’re completely over this phase of rate increases, but the 2024 outlook is forecasting a premium increase of a much more
reasonable increase of 15% 2 .
Auto Insurance
Advancements in technology are the biggest driving force in premium changes for auto insurance. Monitoring devices give accurate information and risk assessments about driving habits that could either increase or decrease a driver’s rate. New trends like
ridesharing, electric vehicles, and autonomous vehicles will create new risks and opportunities for insurers, as they will have to adjust their products and pricing to reflect the changing exposure and liability of drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. For
example, electric vehicles may have lower maintenance and fuel costs, but higher repair and replacement costs due to the complexity and scarcity of parts. Ride-sharing and micro-mobility may offer convenience and affordability, but also raise issues of ownership, responsibility, and coverage. Coupled with inflation, we’re estimating an average increase of about 10% for auto insurance.
Commercial
Commercial insurance is a mixed bag of rate increases and decreases depending on the coverage. Last year, Florida legislation was passed to lower the average workers compensation rate by 15.1%. With increased safety standards and lower claims, business owners are one of the few sectors getting a break with insurance rates. As with home insurance, commercial property is facing the same struggle with rate increases. Last year, we saw many rates increase on average of 50%. But the worst is
over and this year rates are only forecasted to rise between 5%-30% 3 . A skyrocketing threat that business owners need to be prepared for is Cyber Risk. The last few years have seen a 100% YOY 4 increase in number and severity of threats. Cyber criminals especially like to target small businesses to get access to sensitive customer data. If you don’t already have a cyber insurance policy for your business, now is the time to do so. Our agency has served the Emerald Coast for more than forty years. And while the rate
increases of the last few years have been unprecedented, we have the experience and knowledge to get our customers through this current market. We’re all in this together.

Is Hiring An Interior Designer Worth It:
by Kim Schneider owner: Home - Coastal Design by Kim
Have you created mood boards, searched the internet for hours on end or wandered the
isles of your favorite store and still can’t decide how to move forward with your project?
If you said yes, you should hire an Interior Designer.
Interior Designers are trained to do everything from space planning, furniture layouts, fabric selection, color consultations and so much more. There are some designers that specialize in particular areas, such as kitchen and bath. Oftentimes people are intimidated by working with a designer, but I’m certain you’ll find the benefits are well
worth it. Below are a few reasons you’ll want an interior designer as your teammate. Interior Designers have a lot of resources. They have the potential to save you time by identifying reliable contractors, electricians, plumbers, painters and other trades for your
project.
Interior Designers can help keep you on budget and save you time and effort by researching products and pricing. They can also help keep your project moving forward by ensuring items are ordered in a timely manner. Interior Designers can help bring the “WOW Factor” you’ve been hoping for. They envision the overall picture that clients often cannot. Thinking outside and inside the box
is what a designer does.
I highly recommend you interview more than one interior designer. Ask a lot of questions. Ensure they are qualified to do the job. Are they certified? Do they have insurance? What’s their experience? Most of all make sure you connect with them and
can see yourself working along side them. Overall, hiring an Interior Designer will help streamline the design process. Interior
Designers will sweat the small stuff for you, keep you from wasting time and making costly mistakes, and you’ll get the result that’s right for you and your space. These are all great reasons to hire an Interior Designer!

Christian Corner: by Patricia Lee
LOVE!
John 13:34
"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another." The Good News: We must always remember to love each other just as much as God loves us, which is unconditionally."
This passage is so important in this day and time. Too much hate is taking place in this world and love is badly needed. Human's seem to only be able to love unconditionally when it comes to loving their own children. God knows we are mere mortals and cannot love "all" others the way He does but it is important for us to try. Be conscience and aware as you walk through each day of trying to have love in your heart for all. Start with compassion and understanding and whole lot less judging. Walk out the door each day with kindness in your heart and on your mind, ready to display to all who come in contact with you. Seriously make the effort to think before you speak. As we used to say in the '70's, "What Would Jesus Do?" Give this a try and you will be amazed at positively it will change your life and in ways you can never even imagine.
