Important Destin Information
*Destin is located in Okaloosa County and is nicknamed The Destin Bubble. This is because many times the weather will be bad all around us but not here. Most of the storms will turn inland at Okaloosa Island and head north or go across the ocean toward Panama City missing our little cove completely. We are certainly not exempt from bad weather but we get a lot less of it than those to our west and east.
So, how did that sand get to be so blinding white? Origin of Destin's beautiful, white sand. The unique sand of the beaches in the Destin area is among the whitest and most homogenous of the world. Consisting of small quartz particles, this sand came from a process involving the Appalachian Mountains and the Apalachicola River 20,000 years ago.

*When you move here you have to get used to calling the water the Gulf and not the Ocean. We aren't trying to say they are two separate bodies of water with different creatures. It is simply a matter of reference to a geographical location. Many times locals will tease the visitors about calling the water the ocean but it's all in good fun!
Official Geographical Definitions:
Gulf = Body of water surrounded on three sides by land.
Ocean = Large open body of water.
It's that simple!
*45mph is as fast as you can drive on GCH98 and 35mph or less on the back roads. It's common to see golf carts or colorful mini cars, on the back roads so be mindful of them. Chill out and get used to the slow pace. Leave the road rage behind! Remember, traffic can greatly increase during Spring Break and summer. Be mindful of early morning and late afternoon hours, as locals are also out there traveling to and from work.
*When you are in the roundabouts, on the back roads, remember to use you blinker, as you come out of the circle heading onto one of the side roads. People trying to get into the roundabout will appreciate it. Visitors are not always sure how to use the roundabouts so, as a local, please be patient and courteous.
*Motorcyclist do not have to wear helmets so, please be extra careful when driving close to them.
*As a local you will be required to be friendly and smile a lot! It's what we do! You won't find it difficult. What's not to be happy about when you live at the beach?!?

This is where you go when you are ready to get your drivers license, car tag, boating, fishing or hunting license, etc.. It is located in a shopping strip behind Walmart. Take a number and be seated. I have never had to wait very long at all. They open at 8:30am. https://www.okaloosatax.com/

This is where you can buy an annual pass for Henderson or other state parks and beaches plus, so much more. You do have to prove you are resident so be sure to get your drivers license first before going to City Hall. Check out their website! City Hall is conveniently located just down the street headed West from the Okaloosa County Tax Collector's office. Go almost all the way around the roundabout and you will see it. By the way, as you start around the roundabout, you will see a nice dog park, on your right but there are others, as well.
