Destin Bids Welcome To Another Year In Paradise:
Story shared by Lori Leath Smith, Publisher - Life Media, Inc. Destin Life community newspaper
As the new year is now a reality, I have been thinking about our city’s rich heritage and how it influences our local lifestyles today. It helps to know some of our history in order to appreciate our piece of Paradise and how far we’ve come. I wonder if early Destin pioneer Leonard Destin had any idea his small fishing village would one day become an iconic haven for locals and visitors.
We’re located on the east side of our main waterway, the picturesque East Pass, which connects the Gulf to Choctawhatchee Bay, 30 miles long and four to six miles wide – a peninsula that was originally an island before hurricanes changed it over time. The East Pass was formed after a hurricane caused major flooding around the Choctawhatchee Bay in 1926, and to remedy this, locals began digging a path from Choctawhatchee Bay to the Gulf of Mexico. The flood waters then rushed through, creating it.
Our history dates back to the 7th century A.D. Artifacts confirm early Native Americans lived here due to the abundant seafood in our Bay and Gulf. Then Spanish explorers arrived approximately 900 years later. In the late 1700s and early 1800s, while Florida was still under Spanish rule, the Destin area was known as Moreno Point, named after Don Francisco Moreno.
In approximately 1845, Leonard Destin, who moved from New London, Conn., settled here after the first settlers, the McCullom family. (Leonard later married Martha McCullom.) An avid fisherman, for decades, he and other settlers fished and navigated the only channel passage to the Gulf of Mexico between Panama City and Pensacola, which continues to be an important part of our present-day community. Back then, they fished close to shore with seine nets from small boats. (You can see the oldest seine fishing boat on display at the Destin’s History & Fishing Museum, The Primrose, a restored, 1920s-era boat.) Moreno Point became a federal military reservation in 1842, and in the 1850s, more settlers arrived.
At that time, our area was known as East Pass. In 1896, William Marler, who would eventually become the local postmaster, filed an application with the Post Office Department for a post office at East Pass on the western edge of our modern-day Destin. However, they wanted a single-word name. So, William, who had worked for Leonard, resubmitted the application with the name “Destin” after our early pioneer, and that’s how we became Destin.
The original US-98, now much of it designated in our area as “Scenic 98,” was constructed west from Panama City into Destin in the mid 1930s, and a bridge was built in 1936 across East Pass from Fort Walton Beach to Destin. With US-98 and the bridge, Destin became easily accessible, allowing the first tourists who loved to fish and enjoyed the crystal, white beaches to arrive. The first passenger-carrying fishing boat went into business in 1939.
By the way, our unique sand is........

Wallpaper! It's Back Baby!:
By Paul McArthur - Owner: Agape Home Pro
You didn’t really think that wallpaper was going to go out of fashion, did you? This is one trend that has major staying power, and it’s back with a bang.
You may have noticed that wallpaper is being increasingly used in decoration projects for both commercial and domestic spaces.
In fact, Pinterest has revealed that in searches for “wallpaper” were up by 41 percent last year. But what is it about wallpaper that makes it such an attractive choice?
Four reasons why wallpaper is making a comeback:
Wallpaper comes in so many different styles and textures today
There is only one place to begin when it comes to the popularity of wallpaper, and this is with the fact that there are so many different textures and styles for you to select from today.
Examples include natural grasscloth, embossed silk textures, foils, beads, gels, suede, raised inks, glitter, pearl, and much more. This means that the possibilities are endless when it comes to creating a beautiful interior design with the use of wallpaper.
Of course, you don’t have to add the same wall covering to all the walls. You can play around with different options in this regard, from mixing and matching wallpaper to creating a feature wall.
In fact, you can even use wallpaper to simulate several different finishing materials. After all, the concept behind wallpaper was the desire to generate the effect of finishing cloth. Today, wallpaper can imitate virtually anything, from rusted and gold iron to Venetian plaster and marble.
Wallpaper is great at hiding imperfections and it is easy to look after
Not only does wallpaper come in many different colors, patterns, styles, and textures, but it is effective at hiding imperfections as well.
If you live in an older property, cracked walls can be unsightly. However, wallpaper can do a great job of hiding this. The patterns will hide blemishes and smudges, and wallpaper is easy to clean as well. All you need is a little bit of water and a sponge!
You can expect many years of use from your wallpaper
Another benefit is that wallpaper is highly durable. So long as you choose quality wallpaper and you look after it properly, you can expect your wallpaper to last for a long time, retaining its color and ensuring the appearance is left unchanged.
If you do decide that you want to switch things up and introduce some new colors and patterns to the mix, it is easy to do this. You can remove wallpaper and add a new design.
Wallpaper provides a cost-efficient way of giving your home a makeover
Last but not least, another reason why wallpaper is making a big comeback is that it provides you with a cost-effective way of transforming your home.
Want to give your home a sleek and stylish new look? This is exactly what you can expect with wallpaper. This is an interior design change that can have a massive impact and completely change the look and feel of any room.
How do you choose the best wallpaper for your interior design project?
It does not matter whether you are re-designing a commercial or domestic space, it is important to carefully consider the style of wallpaper you are going to go for: color, patterned, plain, modern… the list goes on.
One of the best things about using wallpaper is having the ability to transform a room into a design that has heaps of style and depth. The easiest and most economical approach is to select a solid wall and create a wallpaper accent wall.
Why do you need a professional for wallpaper applications?
A lot of people assume that they are going to be able to wallpaper their home with ease… until they get started! Hiring a professional wallpapering company will save you huge amounts of time. You know that they have provided this service time and time before, so they will be able to wallpaper your home quickly and efficiently.
Plus, professional installers are much more knowledgeable. They know exactly what is required to install wallpaper. After all, depending on the types of walls you have and the current condition of them, you may need assistance with one of the following:
The BEST thing to do is check their references, ask for pics from prior jobs, AND make sure they are are certified as Residential Installation Specialist from the Wallcovering Installers Association – HINT, only two companies in Okaloosa County have that certification, we are one of them!
From the beautiful look that you can create with wallpaper to the ease of maintenance, the cool new look and the bold statement it makes, it is not hard to see why wallpaper keeps on coming back in fashion!
Just remember… the best installers are not sacrificing quality to save time. They slow down and take their time to maintain their reputation and the quality of the outcome.

The Sheriff is coming to town to clean up the Wild West of Insurance
by: Daniel Jones, Insurance Agent and Owner: Norton Insurance Agency
How the new Florida Insurance Legislation Affects you.
I don’t know about you, but I feel like the last two years I’ve been a bartender watching a
continual saloon fight between insurance companies, attorneys, mortgage companies,
and contractors. We as Floridians are those poor civilians caught in the middle, seeing
every table overturned, and having the responsibility to clean up broken glass after. The
natural elements are harsh here, it’s not “if” a disaster will hit, but “when”. Many of the
stabilizing insurance companies have left town with nothing but the clothes on their back.
Couple that with the out-of-town contractors looking to make quick money filing sketchy
roof claims and there’s a financial powder keg that was close to exploding.
Just this month another insurance company, after 6 th others last year, went into receivership which is basically
insolvency. As a result of this turmoil, the surviving insurance companies have raised their rates to stave off their own
collapse. Believe it or not, they are just trying to survive in harsh conditions. After all, nearly 40% of all hurricanes hit
Florida.
But the good news is that there’s a new sheriff in town, ready to mediate the conflict between insurance companies and
the other parties and in turn, make our state more affordable for home insurance. The Florida State Legislature enacted
some major changes to insurance for our state in late 2022 and here is what the new home insurance legislation means
for you:
1. Prompt Pay Laws for Property Insurance- Now, carriers will have to either pay or deny the claim within 60-90
days. This is an attempt to eliminate the back-and-forth drawn-out claims process and get claimants the money
they need to recover more quickly.
2. Decrease in deadlines for filing claims to within one year- intended to prevent fraudulent or unnecessary claims.
This will allow insurance companies to better predict and account for their expenses. More certainty should lead
to more modest rates.
3. Attorney Fees- each party is responsible for their own attorney fees, reducing the likelihood of exorbitant fees
charged to the defeated party. Since insurance companies are often the one who pays, they are probably
planning lower expenses in the future, and lower expenses should lead to better insurance prices.
4. Assignment of Benefits, once a source of added complexity and cost to settling claims, is now virtually
eliminated. With the threat of this removed, insurance companies should feel more comfortable bringing rates
down.
5. Flood coverage is going to be required in many cases. This is meant to expand the pool of people paying into the
flood fund in order to pay claims when they are needed. Currently less than 20% of Floridians have flood
insurance.
6. Arbitration is allowed as a form of dispute resolution, allowing both parties to resolve issues outside the
expense of court. This will be important now given #3 above.
7. Stricter guidelines for qualification of Citizens Insurance. Citizens is meant to be a last-resort insurance company
but has doubled its policy count in the last two years. Since it is operated by the state, this change is meant to
keep the private insurance market from being completely undercut by the public one.
In short, the legislation is aimed at stabilizing the insurance marketplace in Florida in the hopes of bringing prices down
in the long run.
A strong-willed sheriff supported by fresh legislation may just be able to save the day and keep all the fighting groups in
order. We’re hoping that because the legislature was “quick on the draw” enacting these changes, we’ll be able to see a
stabilization in our premiums and more competition in the market relatively quickly.
As insurance agents that have been serving this town for more than 40 years, this is one of the most significant
legislative changes we’ve seen. More than anything, we need healthy, fair, open, and well capitalized competition in our
insurance marketplace to keep living in paradise wonderful.

John 3:16 King James Version of the Bible
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
No matter who you are or what evil you may have committed, Father God does love you. Some may break His heart but He still loves every human being. He is understanding and forgiving beyond anything we mere mortals can comprehend. You have to remember He isn't human. He is the all mighty! He understands the reasons for every action and every word done and spoken by every human, in ways that we never can.
If you have not accepted Him into your life, sincerely ask for His forgiveness of your past sins and you will receive it. He wants you to have all the blessings He has to give. His arms are open for anybody who wants to come to Him.
And, there is no problem you can have that He cannot guide you through; giving you all the knowledge and strength you need. Tell Him you want Him in your life; that you want to see Him in Heaven one day; that you want to live a life that will make Him proud of you. A life that will be full of worship toward Him and putting Him first in all that you do. Just "ask and ye shall receive!" Yes, it's that simple. He will write your name in the Lambs book of life and it shall never be erased. Go to Him now. He is waiting.
